Frequently Asked Questions

When does school start? The school day begins at 8:25 am and ends at 3:50 pm. Students should not arrive at school prior to 7:40 in the morning. YMS asks that students not be checked out at 3:00 pm or after.
Can I volunteer in the classroom? Please do! We depend on it! Volunteers are needed on a regular basis. If you are interested, please let me know by a note to school or you can email from this website.
How the students have free time? The students eat lunch then are allowed to socialize or play games at the baseball field. Some kids play basketball or soccer. Others just walk around and visit.
Do we get to work on computers? We spend a lot of time on the computer. You will explore many things on the computer through scavenger hunts, games, webquests and more. You will also have computer time during small group time.

How much homework will I have? Every evening you will be expected to read 20 minutes in "Just Right" books. You will also have a Journal assignment every night plus Spelling homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. You will be given time during class to do most of your homework. So if you use your time wisely, you won't have much homework at night.
How will my child be evaluated? The evaluation tools are selected on the basis of the appropriateness for the concept that is taught. Teacher observation, oral reports, projects or reports, rubrics, conferences with students, open-ended question responses, class participation, and performance are examples of evaluation tools that may be used. Reading assessments will be given at the end of each unit of study. Re-teaching and re-testing strategies are used to remediate and strengthen weaknesses.
